    Question 5 -
    What do you think of the quality of the design and composition? Do you believe the composition was well thought out, reasons? Were the elements of space, line and shape effectively used (yes and no not acceptable answers)?

    I think that it is obvious that time went into planning this piece. Michael was very careful to include textbook examples of the elements of line, shape and space. He used size and placement of subjects on the work to convey distance and depth and reinforced this by using the clearly defined perspective lines of the road. The swimmer adds a feel of surrealism to what would otherwise be a fairly normal landscape, and I think that the choice to blur the lines of the road in a V behind him (just as water would ripple behind a swimmer) shows attention to detail. I also like the defined shape and texture of the clouds, as I think they “break up” the negative space and create visual interest outside the obvious subjects. The only suggestion I would offer would be to possibly move the plane to either the right or left. Since he has the truck, the swimmer, the setting sun and the line of the road all centered around the middle of the work, I think it would help to have something that would move our eye around the peripheral a bit.

    In this design, the concept of transportation is thoughtful and well presented. The swimmer is imaginative and thought provoking. The endless road into the sunset beckons with the promise of adventure at some far-off destination. I think Michael did an excellent job at conveying his vision the topic.

    Question 2 – Line
    How is line used in the composition?
    Well done, the use of line is achieved on this composition, one can see the sugested line towards the sunset then when you find yourself wondering on the clouds the use of hatching convey the volume of them, loocking to the right you find yourself flying the imaginary lines of movement take your eyes to the left and to the bottom as you see the swimmer coming to the viewer. Great topic.

    Question 3 – Shape: Michael

    How is shape used in the composition? 2-d, 3-d, grouping of shapes,
    etc. How were elements of shape used to optimum effect in composition?
    If shape was not effective give reasons.

    Shape is used in this composition very subtly. You can almost form a triangle with the three separate images of the swimmer, truck, and plane. In the clouds, you can almost pick out different shapes to form certain objects, especially with the hatched look to them. Shape is also used to create a lens flare, or sunset/sunrise. The grouping of the small little cloudy shapes behind the plane give the illusion that it’s moving quickly forward.

    Question #1

    How is space used in the composition? (filling the space:concept of Positive/Negative explored.

    Space was used very well in this compostion with the truck looking like its going down the road gives the illusion that it is farther away from the plane than it actually is.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Shape is used effectively in this composition to bring the eye to a central location/destination.
    The two 2D trianagular grass and sand shapes on the horizon coupled with the triangular street shape in the foreground that touches the horizone at the narrow end bring the eye to that point.
    The swimmer, car and plane grouping continue to move the eye in that direction by their middle positions on the canvas.
    The lense flare circle shape close to the car and the other on the horizon which looks like a sun to a degree continue to pull the eye to that one spot on the canvas.
    The sky serves as negative space to enhance the focus to the end of the road.
