What role does texture have in the composition? (Detail, pattern, space, and/or design). Be specific, if texture missing or weak include that also.
The strongest texture element in this design is the water splashing into the hands. It give the impression of depth to that part of the image. It is rather difficult to see if there are more texture elements in the image due to the small size of the image that is displayed.
4. How effectively was the concept of “green-ness” explored? Do you think that this student used the elements of value, texture and color effectively to enhance the concept, how did the branding of the song interplay if at all
With everyone being familiar with the universal sign of recycling, I feel that the concept of green-ness was explored, as reusing as much as possible, especially water, is a very “green” practice… I think that the concept of value was enhanced through the background color choice as well as the black out of the lady to the left. I feel that texture was brought in with the water as if it is being poured over the text and symbol, adding depth to the picture overall. I feel that the concept of color was enhanced by the choices to use blue and green. Sometimes less is more. The green represented the “green-ness” and the blue as water. It was easy to understand that. I feel that the branding of the song was brought in with the lady holding “earth”. It effectively symbolized possesion of the world being yours to care for….
3. How is color used in the overall composition? Which colors dominate which reinforce the concept? How is color value used in composition? Be specific and use terms related to color.
The color scheme Michael chose to use is very cohesive to the “green” theme. The dominant colors in his composition are Green and Blue. Since most of us automatically think green when we think environmentalism and blue when we think water, this makes a lot of sense! The “color value” is especially prevalent in his background, where he uses a sort of color gradient to draw the viewers’ eye to the lower portion of the page. I like this the use of this technique because it causes viewers to focus on the images first rather than the words. I also liked the choice to use only the black shape of the woman holding the earth baby, as it keeps the total composition simple, with the majority of the details being in the splashing water and the earth. This intentional use of contrast really focuses the viewer on the subject of the composition.
Question 1: Project 2 Critique – Value
How is value used in the composition? (Creates 3-d, use of light and dark, mood, contrast). Be specific, if value missing or weak include that also.
Hello, Michael!
I really like the use of value with the dark female silhouette that brings out the earth ‘child’. The contrast is very effective. When I first saw it I thought the imagery quite clever.
The background gradient works well, going from light to medium and making the eye moves from top to bottom.
The values are mostly pale, which give the piece a light mood to it. If you wanted to be more serious about the subject matter, more contrasting elements and overall darker tone would help convey that.
You kept the value palette simple, which helped make it successful. My only suggestion is that due to the colour choices within the rest of the piece (especially the grey values), it would have been more tied together if you had used a medium or dark grey for the female silhouette instead of black. On darker monitors, the subtle values defining the female form get lost. A grey body in the same value as the darker grey shadows in the hand would probably work well. Another solution would have been to make the female form a very pale grey, to send her more into the background, in that way emphasizing the earth ‘child’.
5. What do you think of the quality of the design and composition? Would this design work well as a billboard or for multi-purpose advertising? Does the concept of sustainability as far as water the strongest focus of the piece?, Please explain in detail.
I think that the quality and design of this picture portrays a lot of depth. It speaks with the pictures and how there put together. I think value was very adequately used to focus on the water which is definitely the strongest piece. This design would work excellently as a billboard because it’s straight to the point in delivering the message of water conservation. It is beautifully put together and its meaning is unmistakable. I think this picture is awesome, I really liked it.
